Method of my Experiment

Equipment
  • 6x 285mL plastic cups
  • 6x measuring cups
  • water
  • 20g of sugar
  • 20g of salt
  • 20g of tomato sauce
  • 20mL of mouth wash
  • 20mL of soft drink
  • Stopwatch
  • Scissors
  • Freezer
  • Kitchen Scale (0g - 500g)
  • Sticky Labels
Method
  1. Pour 250mL of water into each of the 6 plastic cups.
  2. Label each of the cups according to the substance being used on the particular cup.
  3. Place the plastic cups in the freezer making sure they are close to one another.
  4. Measure out the sugar, salt, tomato sauce, mouth wash and soft drink to 20g/mL each with the kitchen scale.
  5. When all the water has frozen remove them from the freezer.
  6. Using scissors cut small slits about 1cm in length at the bottom edge of each cup, keep the cut for every cup as consistent as possible.
  7. Place each of the cups into their seperate measuring cups.
  8. Pour the substance required for on the label of the cup into the correct cup. E.g. Pour tomato sauce into the cup labelled tomato sauce, etc. However leave the cup labelled 'water' alone.
  9. Place the measuring cups close together away from any sunlight to ensure accurate results.
  10. After 10 minutes check on the cups and record the amount of water (in mL) lost for each one. Keep the time using the stopwatch.
  11. Continue repeating step 10 until every single cup has completely melted, recording the results as you go.
  12. Compile the results into a table and graph.
  13. Repeat the experiment about 3-4 times for accurate results.

What melts ice fastest

A lot of things are similar....

Equipment:

Plastic cups
Water/Ice
Five substances (probably pepper, salt, sugar, soft drink, tomato sauce)
Camera
Measuring cup

Repeat experiment every Saturday to ensure accurate results.

Independent Variables
  • the materials placed onto the ice.
Dependent Variables
  • the melting rate
Controlled Variables
  • the amount of water is equal.
  • the amount of substances is equal.
  • the 10 minute time span before re-checking the cups.
  • repeating the experiment every Saturday
  • the amount of sunlight exposure/room temperature

Changed my mind.

The experiment I was considering before turns out it won't give out fair results, so I've decided to do what melts ice fastest instead~ Different substances have different effects on ice, some of them cause ice to melt faster than usual.

For the experiment, I'm going to get 6 plastic cups and freeze the water inside until it becomes ice. Then I'll make sure to place them in a dark room so that sunlight will not greatly affect the experiment. Choosing five substances, salt, pepper, sugar, tomato sauce and a soft drink. I'll place even amounts in each of the cups of ice but leave the 6th cup of ice alone. I'll observe the experiment every 10 minutes in order to record results and take photographs.

Doing "What affects the freezing rate of water".

Equipment:
Plastic cups
Water
Freezer
Equal amounts of soil, salt, staples, sugar, etc.
Alarm

Repeat experiment every Saturday to ensure accurate results.

Independent Variables
  • the materials placed into the water
Dependent Variables
  • the freezing rate
Controlled Variables
  • all cups are placed closely together in the freezer.
  • the amount of water is equal.
  • the amount of soil\salt\sugar\etc is equal.
  • temperature of the freezer.
  • the 30 minute time span before re-checking the cups.

Description of "What affects the freezing rate of water"

Different substances have effects on the freezing rate of water through making the water more dense when the substances are added.

I'll prepare all the materials and equipment first which includes plastic cups, equal amounts of water, equal amounts of substances (soil, salt, sugar, etc) and some space in the freezer. After preparing five cups, four will have substances whereas one will just be filled with water.
Then I'll place the cups in the freezer and check on them in 30 minute intervals and record any changes. I'll repeat this every Saturday because I'm usually free and I might change the set temperature of the freezer each week, it could come up with some different results every week. (:
I guess I'll need an alarm to remind myself every 30 minutes or so. Heh.
